A false legal agreement in the false paradox of agreement

At one time, it was quite common for corporate pension plans to end with the statement "This plan does not create a contract." The idea was that the plan told people what they could expect if the employer didn't change its mind or run out of money. But the language always struck me as paradoxical. If the plan doesn't create a contract, then the disclaimer is not binding, and if the disclaimer is not binding, then maybe the plan does create a contract. But if the plan does create a contract, then the disclaimer is binding....

In 1974, the Federal government passed a law making pension plans binding. Phew!
