About Ronna Romney McDaniel

A Uniquely awful hire

NBC has hired Ronna McDaniel (nee Romney, but we don’t talk about that) as a paid political analyst. Why on earth would a news organization hire someone who lies about politics to “analyze” political news?

Hiring McDaniel not only makes no journalistic sense, it removes from the board a potential interviewee whose lies need to be heard and exposed. When I watched Meet the Press on March 24, I was unaware that McDaniel had been hired by NBC. I thought she was just a guest being interviewed by a determined, if feckless Kristen Welker. (“Ms. McDaniel, when did you realize that the 2020 election was not stolen?” never got asked.) It wasn’t until Chuck Todd went medieval on NBC’s brass that I doped out what was going on. Indeed, it seemed from Todd’s comments that Welker had booked McDaniel before the latter was hired.

For her part, McDaniel confirmed in her interview what the reporters at NBC had to say: she continued to lie about the 2020 election. There are, she tells us, “still questions” about that election. That’s what’s known out here in the real world as a dog-whistle, a way of saying to the election deniers that they should keep the faith, because, you know, there are questions. Given that there are in fact no outcome-determinative questions, why mention the questions at all if not to imply, dishonestly…
