Maya Angelou said “When someone shows you who they are believe them; the first time.” Last night, Donald Trump showed us (again) who he is, and I for one was very pleased to believe him (again). All we can really ask of a debate is that it reveal what kind of person is asking to be our leader. Last night’s debate did that, with fire and fury the likes of which the world has never seen before.

This is not 1858. Lincoln and Douglas needed to debate their positions because their positions were not available on the ‘Net. If you want to know where the candidates stand, visit their websites or watch them or their surrogates on Sunday morning. Yes, there will be some some bobbing and some weaving, and some outright fibbing, but that’s sort of the point: actions speak louder than words, which means that Presidential debates are most valuable when they let us see the candidates in action. By that measure, last night’s debacle was the best debate ever.

The debate was useless for those of us who already think we know enough about these candidates to make a firm choice. (I put my ballot in the drop-box yesterday.) But some viewers were watching with minds at least a crack open. Those viewers saw a jerk running against a decent man. They were not going to get that information from the candidates’ anodyne websites. No, that…
