For me, August 6, 2015 is the date democracy died. That was the day when the Republican candidates for president pledged to support the party's nominee, even if it was Donald Trump. Amazingly, Trump was the only person on the stage honest enough to say he would not necessarily support the eventual nominee. The cretinous jellyfish on the stage with him made clear that democracy here was dead.
BTW, impeaching Clinton, not acquitting him, was the sign of bad things to come. Neither what he did nor lying about it was an impeachable offense. (I don't think Trump's Zelensky ploy was impeachable either. It was very bad presidentiing, but it was the sort of thing we deal with at the ballot box. January 6 is a different matter, and there the Senate's refusal to convict was shameful.
