I don't believe we can make problems go away by overstating them. Nothing is as bad as this grotesquery makes out, but milder versions of some of the things are in fact happening.

"Ordinary" White people sense that they are at risk. Their privileges are under attack and are eroding. The pie is not growing fast enough to share with all the previously screwed-over minorities. Of course, the pie would be growing fast enough if there weren't so many White women in the work force, but who would dare to raise that argument in your classroom?

Trump's ascendance is evidence of how out of balance our society has become. He is America's Hitler, not in the details, but in the degree of awfulness voters will overlook to validate their fears and resentments. If we democrats don't assuage those fears and ease those resentments, a fascist government will.
