I Don’t Watch Women’s Basketball…

But I do watch women’s tennis.

Samuel Johnson wrote:

“Sir, a woman’s preaching is like a dog’s walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.”

That’s pretty much how I feel about women’s basketball. The sport rewards a sort of athleticism that men exhibit more than women. Played well, basketball calls for skills that only a few men and not enough women to populate a league possess. Whether a good men’s team could beat a great women’s team is irrelevant. I’m just saying that the game itself is most enjoyable for me as a spectator when it is played as men play it. The same is true for baseball, hockey, football, golf, boxing, and most track and field events. I’m not a big enough fan of soccer to decide whether it belongs in this list, but, maybe because I don’t understand the game, I’m thinking that women’s soccer is as much fun to watch as men’s soccer.

In contrast, I love to watch women’s tennis, which I see as a very different game from men’s tennis. To me, men’s tennis is not a very good spectator sport. The serve is too important, and rallies don’t last long enough.
