I keep thinking of the line attributed, probably apocryphally, to Golda Meir: “We can forgive you for killing our children, but we cannot forgive you for making us kill yours.” I can forgive Trump voters for shouting “Lock her up” — after all, they are all either idiots or assholes— but I cannot forgive them for making me want to shout “Lock him up,” because, not being an idiot, that would make me an asshole.
We must be very slow to criminalize politics; doing so puts us on the slipperiest of slopes, and I don’t believe we have the tools to survive there.
