I suspect HAMAS never read "The Ransom of Red Chief." By taking hostages, HAMAS has given Israel moral cover to do whatever damage it says it must do in retrieving them. That's dumb if you are fighting a propaganda war.

Taking hostages is a military strategy that no opponent is obliged to respect. What does one do when faced with hostage-taking? Say "well-played!" and surrender? Not hardly.
