I think Biden understands the last paragraph of his article. Pushing identity politics over labor politics cost Hillary the election. He is trying not to make the same mistake.

Whether he's succeeding is another question. His weakest moves have been his identity promises - a woman running mate, a Black woman SCOTUS appointment - and his strongest moves have been pro-union talks in the Rust Belt. He could have chosen Sen. Harris WITHOUT making her look like an affirmative action hire, and his first SCOTUS appointment, if he gets one, will carry the same burden, only for life.

Trump may be the only Republican Biden can beat, but, fortunately, Trump is the only Republican Biden is running against.
