I think Hamilton and Dawkins have it right, but no matter. If we can "see ourselves in others," that capability may be an evolved trait. We have evolved to be able to suspend our disbelief. That's how we are capable of faith and capable of enjoying a novel. All of these capabilities can be explained by genetics - which is not the same thing as saying that they are explained by genetics, but is sufficient to make the Great Fudge Factor in the sky unnecessary.
