In the real world, the horse is exactly where it needs to be in relation to the cart. When the GOP Senators facing re-election come to the Speaker and say “We have to impeach Trump to keep our jobs,” there will be an “investigation.” But everyone knows the outcome. That’s how politics is done. That’s how it should be done. If the American people, knowing what they have every reason to know, won’t throw out Senators who vote to acquit Trump, why shouldn’t he be President?

On a related subject, I believe that the President should be “above” certain laws, or, at least, the punishment for breaking them should be different for a President than for an ordinary citizen. We get to pick one human being at a time to be President. If we can’t pick someone we trust enough to give a pass on certain criminal matters, then we’re just not being careful enough.

Certainly, one of the most shameful parts of the Trump campaign were the shouts of “Lock her up.” WE DON’T DO THAT. Ford rightly pardoned Nixon, because we don’t lock up politicians for doing the job of politics corruptly. We get rid of them, and we shame them, but we don’t jail them, because that slope is just too slippery for humans to navigate.

How can “Lock her up!” be offensive if “Indict him when he’s out!” is not? Will anyone run for President if the losing party will eventually be expected to bring criminal charges for some imagined alleged assault on our national survival? It’s nuts. VOTE HIM OUT. And then move on. If we want a moral President, we should elect a moral President. If we fail at that, shame on us. ‘

Nothing scares me more than the Democrat candidates talking about who should be in jail. It’s scapegoating. It’s a lack of imagination. It’s incompetent. And it’s dangerous. Just tell us how you are going to help, not who you are going to blame for your failure.
