Individual Russians may or may not "deserve" the suffering they are experiencing. But they are collateral damage in Putin's war, because their suffering is the best defensive weapon the West has. They are between a rock and a hard place, but that is their boss's fault, not ours.

The "whatabout" argument - I am shocked, shocked, to learn that there is hypocrisy in America - is a distraction. It makes no difference to fighting Putin. Sanctions are the right tactic or they aren't, whatever the moral status of those applying them. There are no self-assessed red cards in geopolitics.
