Would Jesus vote for Trump? His disciple Paul told the Romans that the wages of sin is death. Things certainly have changed. Now, the wages of sin is that people who call themselves Christians believe that God has chosen you to be President of the United States. Sadly, God has so far denied me the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ, so I literally cannot understand what it is like to see the world through that lens. But here in the sublunary realm, I believe my quotidian interests entitle me to ask how the poster child for each and every deadly sin can be your choice of leader.

I won’t rehearse how this angry, envious, gluttonous, greedy, lustful, prideful, and slothful man embodies sin itself. (I’ve already done that elsewhere, sort of.) What I want to know is whether his evangelical supporters (i) disagree that he flagrantly exhibits all of these traits, (ii) just don’t care, or (iii) believe that his awfulness is somehow a test of their faith. Trump himself displays none of the Christian virtues of faith, hope, or love. Well, maybe hope, if you hope for a return to the 1950s. Certainly not the kind of hope on that Obama poster. So, what, exactly, do you see in this human turd that makes you think he will lead us to a better life?
