It is socially valuable to be able to display one's wealth. Portable displays of wealth are called "jewelry." There is a need for such a product, so all that is required is a consensus as to what it will be. But the value is not "subjective." The value is based on the prestige the stone will buy. That is an uncertain figure, but I think "uncertain" is qualitatively different from "arbitrary."
