It’s great that Senator Warren has plans. She will be a great cabinet secretary. But Presidents shouldn’t have plans; they should have goals. And the main goal of the next President should be fixing our politics. A public scold like Ms. Warren is not the person for that job.

I don’t want to hear how the President is going to fix healthcare. I want to hear how the President will get Congress to fix healthcare, how he or she will work with the House to pass good laws and raise the political price for GOP Senators who oppose them but won’t work to improve them. Mitch McConnell may have some valid objections to bills coming out of Ms. Pelosi’s House, but his remedy must be to pass his own damn bill on the subject, send it to conference, and legislate like his job depended on actually getting something done. I want to hear how the next President will make that happen. The plans themselves are a detail. They will matter, but they do not matter yet.

If only one of the Democratic candidates would stand on the debate stage and say “Nerds have plans; Leaders have goals.” Oh, well, a guy can dream, right?
