Mr. Harvey has the naïve notion that professional athletes are in the business of playing their sports. They are not. They are in the business of filling seats and selling beer and trucks. If playing the anthem at the beginning of games sells more beer and trucks, then it is part of the players' job to stand for it.

Like it or not, Colin Kaepernick is in the public relations business. He is not "unable to find work." He is unable to find work selling beer and trucks to people who think the anthem is a good thing to play at the beginning of games. His lack of preparation for a less outward-facing career is his business, not the NFL's.

There is no limit to the totalitarian destruction of the American mythos. Some of the "corrections" are valid. I understand why Black Americans should not be subjected to the indignity of the Rebel battle flag or the sculpted glorification of men whose only distinction was their valiant defense of chattel slavery. But a nation needs a unifying ethos, and ignoring some of clay-footedness of some of our founders is the price of having it. If we don't respect Jefferson and Madison, why should we respect their checks and balances. If we measure the Constitution by the 3/5 clause, how do we take the Bill of Rights seriously?

Life is complicated except to zealots.
