Being sold down the river means being treated like a slave. The expression is a recognition of how bad slavery was; it is not "racist" in any way, shape, or form.

"Moron" was for a long time - maybe still is - a clinical term for a certain level of mental disability. Moron, imbecile, and idiot, in increasing order of disability, were technical terms. They have all been adopted into vernacular English to mean someone silly enough to think they are racist.
