But this is the brilliance of the American experiment. People are going to do what is in their best interest. The trick is to align enough people's self-interest with the benefits of Constitutional democracy. That's a very tall order. But instead of performatively proving that Liz is out for Liz (or that there is gambling in Casablanca), we should instead be marveling at how our system has harnessed her alleged awfulness for our benefit. That re-direction of self-interest is why capitalism CAN produce prosperity (even if it does not always do so, or do so equitably), but Communism cannot.
