The problem is that voluntary goodness is unsustainable. Killer bees will always emerge and out-compete, absent vigilant immunologic responses. Social pressure is key. How does Wal-Mart put Mom and Pop out of business? It's not anything Wal-Mart does. It's Mom and Pop's former customers who are to blame. If their culture valued loyalty to their neighbors, they would not go to Wal-Mart, full stop.
We get the big-box stores we deserve. If good people only shopped at stores run by good people, more good people would open stores. We, the consumes, are why capitalism looks flawed. But the problem is not design error; it's user error.
