The problem with “privilege” is that it becomes a cubby hole into which any aggrieved person can plug any inconvenience. It’s an attempt to create a binary category that makes all affronts equally sinful. It’s reductive, and so, it is dangerous.

And yet, the point is well made that no one who has not been (or feared being) stopped for DWB can understand what not being privileged is like. For “straight white dudes” looking for a shortcut to “understanding” their privilege, I recommend watching Devil in a Blue Dress. Just imagine yourself in the shoes of the protagonist (a black private detective in late-forties Los Angeles), and ask yourself at each critical plot point “What would I do?” and “Why can’t he do that?” That’s white privilege.
