There's an old joke that ends "Yeah, but look how nicely his suit fits." It's about the contortions a poor guy must go through to make an ill-fitting garment look right. That is our two-sex military. A FIGHTING force needs high-testosterone men, not nice men. Instead of screening for gentlemen, the army used to segregate rough men from women. Men fought while women riveted. That's how wars got won.

But now we have come to see the military as an "opportunity" rather than a duty. That's nuts, as is an all-volunteer army.

If, as has been argued, human combat is no longer a very important element of war-fighting, then we can start screening men who apply to see if they have the right temperament for non-combat warfare. OTOH, if combat soldiers do matter, then how they treat women is less important than how they treat the enemy, and women should just stay the fuck out of their way.

Putting women where high-testosterone young men can assault them is stochastic rape. We can blame the rapist, but we have to blame the people who put the women in harm's way in the name of social justice.

A two-sex military, especially one that doesn't need to be one, is simply a bad and unstable idea whose time has come. With any luck, it will pass. Then, no military women will be raped at all.
