To paraphrase the hit man's boast, if Trump really wanted to destroy those records, they'd really be missing. But they aren't. In Elinor Lipman's novel Rachel to the Rescue, the title character's job in the White House is to reassemble paper that Trump has torn up. If we assume Trump knew that his ripped/shredded documents would be Humpty-Dumptied, he is guilty only of expressing disrespect for the law and wasting taxpayer money putting the papers pack together. It's pretty much a nothingburger.

Trump's election and tenure will be a permanent blot on the American people and our electoral system. I am not defending him; I am merely suggesting that we accuse him of real crimes so as not to make it look like we have to make them up.

[Update 2/10. It now appears there’s a hole in Trump’s phone logs for 1/6, and reporting of White House toilets stuffed with paper. Like I said, if he wanted stuff to disappear, it would have disappeared. Only difference is, apparently some stuff did.]
