Trump's superpower is his sociopathy. He has figured out that if you have no core beliefs, you can assemble a coalition of one-issue voters whose interests don't conflict with each other. You can harness the isolationists and the America-firsters and the racists and the evangelicals and the sexists and the homophobes and the anti-Semites and every other stripe of loser. None of their views are contrary to your own, because you have no views of your own. (Does anyone really believe Trump gave a rat's ass about Roe?)
The Democrats threaten the dominance of White Christians. As many observers have said, it's very hard to get a man to believe that something is true when his salary depends on its being false. What is true of money is also true of self-esteem. One party says it's OK to be you, and one party says it isn't. Which lever do you pull? What stories do you tell yourself to make pulling that lever possible? Because you WILL pull it.
