Two Cheers for the Electoral College

I recently ran into a new term (for me): steel-manning. It’s a homey way of describing intellectual honesty: if you oppose something, you should be able to state the best argument for it and then either refute that argument or concede it and show how it is outweighed by counterarguments. I am, however, skeptical of steel-manning as an overt tactic; if you have to say you’re doing it, you probably aren’t.
