Users should be able to buy their way out of having their data collected. Allowing oneself to be tracked is how users pay for Facebook. There should be no problem giving people the option to pay cash instead. Many streaming services already offer the option of "ad-free" streaming. “Private” socializing would be the same idea.

Data collection is part of Facebook’s business model, not an inherent part of its service. Collecting and reselling data is a business, and providing a social network platform is a business. Either could, at least conceptually, be done for cash, and so either can be separated from the other. Indeed, I would argue that the definition of an “interactive computer service” for purposes of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the section that provides defamation immunity to platforms, should exclude any platform that sells user data or carries advertising. The USPS doesn’t sell information or put ads on its stamps, and neither should any other social platform that wishes not to be treated as a publication.
