"We are not abandoning our communities to violence. We don’t want to just close police departments. We want to make them obsolete."

That would be a nice thing for someone in the "Abolish Crime" movement to say. But there is no "Abolish Crime" movement. There is only an "Abolish Police" movement.

The abolish/defund movement as a political matter is named to attract people who hate the good guys. Pretending that they just want to make the police unnecessary is a ploy. There is absolutely nothing there to admire.

Yes, there are downsides to policing, and there are bad police, and it would be great if we didn't need the police. So when someone starts an "abolish crime" movement that prevents crime without using police, I'll support it and the elimination of the police once they have been proven unnecessary. Until then, let's not treat cop-haters as crime-haters.
