"Well, the fact that the last 2 Republican presidents were elected without winning a majority of the popular vote pretty much says it all. "

And you were doing so well! Ideas 1 and 2 are fine, but you have cited the key feature of the EC as proof of its weakness. The allocation of electors is SUPPOSED to balance high-density economic interests and low-density economic interests. That the original EC compromise "allowed the Founders to go forward" seems to me a powerful argument in its defense. What has changed? That the agrarian states no longer practice chattel slavery? That's hardly a reason for ranchers and farmers to give up their political clout. . https://remarklj.medium.com/two-cheers-for-the-electoral-college-10cb0877c28d

The allocation of senators serves the same purpose as the allocation of electors. Having two Houses of Representatives differing only in the length of their terms misses the point of a bicameral legislature.

Number 6 is a mistake. Money buys ink, and ink is what makes politics possible. Libs hate Citizens United. Why don't they cite The Lincoln Project as a malevolent force? (Plenty of flaws in the group, but they did to Trump what C.U. did to Hillary, and that was a good thing.)
