We are seeing the same thing with "woke." When only Black people were using it, conservatives weren't ridiculing it. But when the rest of the grievance industry tried to ride in the slipstream of the Black freedom bus, the word became a rallying cry for frightened White people.

All of this is predictable. The pejorative built into the word "privilege" assured that it would be weaponized. That's why I believe it was invented for that purpose. But if you want to apply Hanlon's Razor and attribute to stupidity what I attribute to malice, feel free. Stupid is bad enough.
