What's in a label? Why would anyone care whether someone else considers him or her a fellow "feminist"? Sure, I understand why someone might not want to be considered a feminist by someone who shoots feminists on sight, but why do the allies need a uniform? Outside of the military, only aholes wear uniforms.

I understand wearing pins, etc., to mark oneself as taking a certain position on a certain issue. But labels are too fluid. Being a "feminist" means too many things to too many people to be useful. More important, I can't think of any reason for anyone to declare himself a feminist. We are what we do. You can say "I believe women shouldn't be treated like shit," without the preface "As a feminist..." No one actually does anything "as a feminist." We do things as ourselves. Why create a label that the other side can use as a stereotype? (Maybe feminists aren't woke to the risks of self-labeling.) The fight to own a label that will eventually be spat back in your face is pretty good evidence that you really aren't about the movement but that, rather, the movement is about you.
