When being woke didn't threaten White people, White people ignored it. Now, being woke does threaten White people because it has come to be about awareness of systemic racism, and one solution to systemic problems is to change the system. BLM is an avowedly Marxist organization. If BLM is associated with "woke," then woke is bad for White people, at least the ones who aren't Marxists. Once the word took on that aura, it was sure to be hijacked.

As I said in my earlier comment, it is the expansion of what Black people are urged to be "woke" to that accounts for the word being demonized. But that's pretty much how things go with words. Activists try to attach a word's connotations to things outside its original scope. Then there's push-back. Nothing to see here, really.
