White folks are also discovering how uncomfortable it is to be called out as wrong...

Are you suggesting that Black people don't mind being called racist, or sexist, or ageist, or whatever-ist?

There's nothing special about having enough self-esteem to think one's not an asshole. It's only the presumption that the accusation is true - because all White people are racists, or at least that all allegations of racism are true - that makes defensiveness seem inappropriate.

If I say that Ms. Libers is a self-hating fool, should she "sit with this and really try to take in what's being said"? My guess is that she would respond that I am a racist. But if I say she's a racist redneck, she should think "Wow, a learning opportunity"?

Anyone who does not bridle at an accusation of racism of the sort that needs to be "explored" lacks the courage of his or her own modest virtue. We are all flawed, but we are not all awful. And if "racist" does not mean "awful," I can think of a lot of racists who, thanks to the dilution of the word, can feel better about themselves than they should.

Do I have implicit biases? I suppose so. But to waste the word "racist" on me is really self-defeating. Maybe the people who throw that word around so blithely should consider sitting with that and listening to what's being said. I dare you.
